Red Hat boosts systems management tool
Module will aid management of Red Hat Enterprise Linux OS
Red Hat Inc., a maker of Linux operating systems, has strengthened its Web-based systems management tool Red Hat Network with a new provisioning module that it plans to roll out at the LinuxWorld Expo in New York on Wednesday.
The new module is designed to allow system administrators to install, deploy, configure and manage servers that use the Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system, a Red Hat spokeswoman said Tuesday.
The Red Hat Network has been available to Red Hat Linux users since 2000 and includes two other modules: the Update module for basic management and maintenance of single systems and the Management module for more advanced group-based management.
The Update module comes with the purchase of Red Hat Linux Enterprise. The Management module costs US$96 per node per year, while the Provisioning module, available now, costs $192 per node per year and includes the Management module, the spokeswoman said.
Red Hat Network is designed to manage only Red Hat operating systems, not third-party operating systems, she said.
The next extension to Red Hat Network will probably come through support for third-party applications, so that they can be managed from the systems management console, she said.
