INDEXHEAD: Motorola cultivates J2ME technology

Motorola has announced a developer support program that supplies wireless developers with tools, services, and assistance to bring wireless applications to market. The program aims to cultivate a developer group that will create applications for the next generation of wireless devices that rely on J2ME technology. Program participants will receive a free SDK on CD-ROM and Web-based technical support from Motorola’s iDEN Subscriber Group. Developers can also submit specific technical problems via email or telephone, or online, for fees ranging from 0 to 00 per case. Motorola started the developer support program to prepare for its J2ME-capable handset, which should be available via iDEN operators in early 2001.

INDEXHEAD: Transindigo enhances product line with FioranoMQ Java messaging

Fiorano Software and Transindigo have announced an agreement in which the FioranoMQ Java messaging service will be integrated into Transindigo’s Elara Product Suite, an authorization and Internet security package. The product is expected to facilitate realtime information sharing. Transindigo’s Elara Suite will allow users to obtain direct user authorization to access data, while FioranoMQ will coordinate disparate front- and back-end systems. FioranoMQ will also support multicomputer replication within the Elara Suite.

INDEXHEAD: Stonesoft introduces StoneBeat ServerCluster

Stonesoft has expanded the StoneBeat product line with the addition of StoneBeat ServerCluster, a software-based clustering solution that provides organizations with automated fault monitoring and failover recovery. StoneBeat ServerCluster secures data in multihost configurations and supports a variety of storage platforms. The application relies on Stonesoft’s Java-based GUI for monitoring network storage, applications, and servers. It supports a range of storage and network offerings, such as DNS servers, email servers, Web servers, and voice-over-IP servers. It also provides enhanced drivers that directly coordinate the storage processors.

StoneBeat ServerCluster is expected to ship in December 2000.

INDEXHEAD: Red Oak Software presents Java-based Legacy Integrator

Red Oak Software’s Legacy Integrator, a Java-based data stream emulation offering, allows terminal-based legacy applications to be incorporated into B2Bi or EAI systems. The application ships with an SDK, a webMethods Enterprise Adapter, and a Runtime Environment; those products facilitate the integration of AS/400, DEC, 390, or Unix application capabilities and data into other enterprise integration offerings. The SDK offers Java developers a capture and automatic code-generation feature that helps integrate legacy application capabilities into the new environment. The SDK also includes an inline testing feature that enables developers to verify that they have captured the proper capabilities. Legacy Integrator is implemented at the server level and contains a built-in Java terminal emulator for 5250, 3270, VT220, and VT100 EAI-B2Bi Adapters and Connectors.

Pricing starts at 5,000 for Development Server bundles, and 0,000 for Production Server bundles.

FirstClass Systems is now offering Enhanced Java 2 Developer Training courses. The series of classes was first developed by MindQ Publishing, in conjunction with the Certification Initiative for Enterprise Development for Java programmers (jCert Initiative). Each interactive course can be taken via LAN, CD-ROM, WAN, or the Internet. The series offers three class groupings:

  • General Java courses provide managers and developers with an overview of Java 2
  • Essential Java training courses teach topics geared to the Sun Certified Java Programmer certification exam
  • Advanced Java courses address more challenging Java programming topics such as JDBC, JavaBeans, and CORBA

eshare communications has released version 4.3 of its eshare Expressions chat offering. Expressions helps organizations add threaded discussion forums, chats, and online presentations to Websites. It also facilitates live training and conferencing, virtual meetings, distance learning, social chat, and moderated events. Expressions 4.3 also offers article searches, chat interface customization, new configurations for Java Light Chat, and forum postings.

INDEXHEAD: Verve revives relational database abilities

Verve has released version 2.6 of the Verve Process Engine Version (VPE 2.6) and version 2.6WL of the BEA WebLogic Server Edition (VPE 2.6WL). VPE 2.6 expands the applications relational database capabilities to persist process data in a larger number of relational databases. It also adds support for Sybase and Oracle 8i, which lets administrators and developers use database tools and platforms that they know. VPE 2.6WL supports WebLogic clustering and can share in distributed Java Transaction Service transactions. VPE 2.6WL also has new deployment options that utilize WebLogic’s clustering support for improved scalability. VPE 2.6WL offers an adapter for EJB integration with conditional logic and process model and includes an update to the Notification Agent Framework that relies on the JMS.

INDEXHEAD: Network Query Language translates to Linux

NQL has introduced a Java edition of its Network Query Language technology. The product, which is also compatible with the Linux operating system, creates intelligent agents, bots, and content management solutions. The Network Query Language Java Edition was developed for Java-2-compatible server and desktop systems. The Linux version’s capabilities are similar to those of the Windows version, though NQL is providing an installation process and Java technical support for Linux users. Network Query Language Java Edition is available in server, workstation, and enterprise editions. The company is currently working toward Sun and Macintosh certification of the technology.

INDEXHEAD: Mediaplex provides realtime email messages

Mediaplex’s email marketing application, MOJO Mail, creates an email message’s content from the enterprise system when the message is opened, instead of when it is sent. MOJO Mail provides users with a customer relationship management tool that sends realtime messages related to an advertiser’s business variables. The application relies on Mediaplex’s MOJO (mobile Java objects) technology. MOJO Mail users upload their in-house mailing list, then rely on HTML templates to establish dynamic content elements. Marketers can establish business rules to create customer groups for particular marketing efforts, then tag pages to monitor customer habits and return with realtime ROI findings.

MOJO Mail will be available in November 2000.

INDEXHEAD: ClearTrust SecureControl 4.5 secures Java-based servers

Securant Technologies has introduced ClearTrust SecureControl 4.5, a user access management system that helps enterprises deploy and secure e-business applications on the Windows 2000 platform and Java-based application servers. ClearTrust SecureControl 4.5 gives users native Active Directory integration, which allows organizations to dynamically coordinate user permissions for Web applications. It also lets organizations track Web users’ behavior, and offers a Web interface that lets administrators remotely coordinate user accounts via a standard Web browser. Version 4.5 ships with plug-in components for EJB-based application servers, so administrators can coordinate security issues from a central location. The application also provides EJB applications with application-level security features like authorization, access control, authentication, delegated administration, and single sign-on capabilities.

ClearTrust SecureControl 4.5 will begin shipping in November 2000. Pricing starts at 0 per user.

INDEXHEAD: MessageBay streamlines online audio advertisements

MessageBay plans to help advertisers add audio to Websites with its Quick Start Program. Quick Start coordinates audio ad creation, from recording the ad to streaming and hosting the online audio message. MessageBay will help organizations write scripts for audio messages, create the message, hire voice talent, and record and encode the audio for streaming. MessageBay will also host and stream the audio ad. The final product is a Java applet that does not require a plug-in to function.

INDEXHEAD: iButton secures the physical and virtual worlds

Dallas Semiconductor has unveiled the DS1957B Java-powered iButton, a wearable, Java-based computer fob. The device provides a physical key for building entrances, as well as a computer key for secure network access and e-signatures. The Java-based system offers 134 KB of RAM and 64 KB of ROM, and can store a color ID image, software applications for different service providers, and hundreds of user names and passwords. The iButton can also hold a variety of Java applets for applications, including user profiles for Internet form-filling, access to buildings and equipment, secure network login with challenge/response algorithms, digital signatures for e-commerce, and a USPS Postal Security Device for PC Postage over the Internet. The iButton protects its information with a firewall and a tamper response feature that erases information when the device is physically harmed.
