EspressChart EJB offers data visualization for Web-based apps

October 12 — Quadbase Systems has released EspressChart EJB, an Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) component that allows developers to include dynamic charts and graphs in distributed applications. This EBJ 1.1-compliant product can render data in 28 2D or 3D chart types and generate charts in the following image formats: GIF, JPEG, PNG, BMP, WMF, and VMRL. In addition, EspressChart EJB can directly draw data from Java Database Connectivity/Open Database Connectivity sources, text files, XML files, or from another application layer as an argument.

Software Tree updates JDX

October 12

— JDX 3.0, Software Tree’s objection-relational (OR) mapping tool, features many new enhancements including JDX Studio, a GUI tool for defining/verifying OR-mapping, forward-engineering database schema, and reverse-engineering Java classes. Other improvements include dynamic data routing for queries, partial object loading, and configurable logging destination.

eTeks launches Jeks and JeksParser

October 12 — eTeks has introduced Jeks 1.0, a Java spreadsheet application that allows formula computation in cells. The product’s classes use JTable‘s TableModel, CellRenderer, and CellEditor concepts to help developers add spreadsheet features to their own tables. eTeks has also unveiled JeksParser, a Java library that parses, compiles, and computes mathematical expressions and functions.

DCT to preview new SDK

October 12 — At JavaOne Yokohma/Japan, DCT (Digital Communication Technologies) will launch the SDK for its Lightfoot processor core. Combined with DCT’s hardware, the SDK will enable designers to execute both Java and non-Java-based programs. With a customizable instruction set, the 32-bit Lightfoot processor core implements an architecture that delivers embedded Java systems with low memory footprints. The processor also executes many bytecodes in a single instruction cycle.

Fujitsu’s app server now J2EE-compatible

October 5, 2001 — Fujitsu Software’s Interstage Application Server 4.0 has completed Sun Microsystems’ Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) for Windows, Linux, and Solaris operating systems. Interstage conforms to J2EE 1.2 — which includes Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), JavaServer Pages (JSP), servlets, Java Messaging Service (JMS), and Java Transaction API (JTA).

Hypercom and 360Commerce partner to deliver Java-based payment solution

October 5, 2001 — Hypercom’s ICE touch-screen card payment terminal is now certified to work with 360Commerce Java-based software applications. Hypercom’s ICE 6000 comes equipped with JavaPOS signature drivers to offer multi-channel services.

Fujitsu to incorporate Java into its multimedia products

October 5, 2001 — Fujitsu Microelectronics and Digital Communication Technologies (DCT) have developed a high-performance embedded Java core for ASIC and ASSP applications. This new architecture removes Java-related bottlenecks and eases integration with existing application and system code.

Que releases Special Edition Using Enterprise JavaBeans 2.0

October 5, 2001 — In Special Edition Using Enterprise JavaBeans 2.0, Chuck Cavaness and Brian Keeton cover Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 2.0 and the underlying technologies key to enterprise Java development. The authors address transactions, security, exception handling, and performance tuning, and discuss new features such as local client views, EJB 2.0 container-managed persistence, and message-driven beans.

Sun releases J2EE 1.3

September 28, 2001 — The latest version of the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) supports J2EE Connectors, Java Message Service (JMS), and message-driven beans. It also includes Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 2.0, increased XML integration, and the enhancements provided by the recently approved JavaServer Pages (JSP) 1.2 and Servlet 2.3 specifications.

Kada and Cisco partner to expand network capabilities

September 28, 2001 — Cisco Systems will use Kada Systems’ Kada Mobile Platform to support Java application capabilities in Cisco’s voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) phones. Powered by the Kada VM, these VoIP phones will provide increased network connectivity, allowing users to simultaneously access Java applications and the Internet as well as communicate with one device.

Merant launches content management tool

September 28, 2001 — Merant’s new PVCS Content Manager 2.0, a Web-based content management tool, enables enterprise content contributors to maintain control of static and dynamic Web content. The product supports Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and allows users to contribute content directly from existing authoring environments.

Java and XSLT now available from O’Reilly

Amber Archer introduces open source Java class library

September 28, 2001 — Amber Archer Consulting has released its entire 750-class Java class library as an open source download. The class library offers generic caching and pooling, rules-engine processing, macro processing, platform-specific Java Native Interface (JNI) routines, and Swing widgets.

Embarcadero launches UML tool for JBuilder

September 28, 2001 — Describe, Embarcadero Technologies’ unified modeling language (UML) design and development tool, now integrates with Borland JBuilder. Developers can now use both Describe and JBuilder through a single interface.

SilverStream releases development environment for Web services apps

September 21, 2001 — SilverStream Software has launched SilverStream eXtend Composer 3.0 and SilverStream eXtend Director 3.0. eXtend is an integrated services environment for the development and deployment of Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition-based Web services-oriented applications. eXtend Composer creates Web-enabled business functions from enterprise information sources into standards-based Web services. And eXtend Director consumes Web services and delivers them to systems, users, or devices.

Idetix ships Revize 3.5

September 21, 2001 — Revize from Idetix Software Systems is Java-based content management software that allows nontechnical editors to manage content and workflow in a management-controlled environment. Version 3.5 includes a developer-driven architecture, advanced authorization and workflow tools, and a multiple Idetix webSpace manager.

IBM updates Web Services Toolkit

September 21, 2001 — IBM’s Web Services Toolkit (WSTK) 2.4 is now available for download. The WSTK provides a runtime environment, examples to design and execute Web services, and introductory material. WSTK functions are based on SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), WSDL (Web Services Description Language), and UDDI (Universal Description Discovery and Integration) and run on both Linux and Windows operating systems.

Denwa certifies Pingtel expressa phone

September 21, 2001 — Denwa Communications has certified the Pingtel expressa phone to operate on the company’s Session Initiation Protocol-based IP service. Pingtel expressa is a Java-based phone that provides a platform for IP voice service providers.

Aligo partners with various J2EE vendors

September 21, 2001 — Aligo has joined the Borland Business Technology Partner Program, the IBM Business Partner program, the Oracle Partner Program, the SilverStream ISV program, and the Sun Developer Connection. By joining these programs, Aligo hopes to ensure that Aligo’s M-1 Mobile Application Server 2.0 can integrate with Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition applications.

SavaJe launches SavaJe Partner Program

September 21, 2001 — SavaJe has formed a partner program to offer customers Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) services based on the SavaJe XE operating system. Scheduled for an October release, SavaJe XE enables Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition Connected Device Configuration (J2ME CDC) and J2SE apps to run on devices. Espial, ION Systems, LOOX Software, NetClue, Nexien, Nivis, Open Source Asia, Parochus Software, Passport Corporation, PointBase, and ThinkFree.com have joined the SavaJe Partner Program.
