Sun integrates J2EE app server with Solaris

May 24 — With the release of Solaris 9, Sun Microsystems adds the Sun ONE (Open Network Environment) Application Server 7, Platform Edition (formerly iPlanet) to the operating system. The company has also bundled its Sun ONE Directory Server with Solaris.

Borland enhances Java development suite

May 24 — Borland Software has updated three of its Java development tools: JBuilder, Optimizeit Suite, and Enterprise Studio for Java. JBuilder 7 now features Web services capabilities and compliance with mobile application standards. Borland has also integrated its performance management solution, Optimizeit Suite 4.2, into the IDE. Enterprise Studio 4 for Java combines JBuilder 7, the Borland Enterprise Server, and Optimizeit Suite 4.2 with the Rational Rose Professional J 2002 Edition and the Rational Unified Process 2002. Enterprise Studio also includes Macromedia Dreamweaver MX.

Coldbeans Software enlarges custom tag library

May 24 — Coldbeans Software’s custom JSP (JavaServer Pages) suite now includes more than 85 tags. The revised Coldtags taglib features tags for database manipulations, XML/XSL (Extensible Stylesheet Language) support, SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration) requests, and more.

Alcea Technologies updates error tracking system

May 24 — Alcea Technologies has released Fast BugTrack 2.0, its Java-based bug tracking system. This latest version includes user/group segmentation, customization through stylesheets, user-definable fields, filter-persistence, and the ability to search a bug’s full text.

VistaJDBC automatically extracts Excel data

May 24 — Developed by VistaPortal Software, the updated VistaJDBC (Java Database Connectivity) driver now provides access and update capabilities to Excel spreadsheet files in multiplatform environments. It automatically obtains data from Microsoft Excel spreadsheets through SQL and allows developers to combine it with data from enterprise sources. With the driver’s additional write capabilities, Java apps can automatically create, access, and update multiple spreadsheets.

Zero G Software improves InstallAnywhere’s XML support

May 24 — InstallAnywhere 5, Zero G’s software deployment tool, includes enhanced XML support, suite installation capabilities, team-development features, Web services-based application deployment tools, drag-and-drop functionality, and Apache Ant integration. Zero G has also released InstallAnywhere for the Mac OS.

Panorama exposes performance problems

May 17 — Altaworks has released Panorama 1.5, a tool for automatically detecting causes of J2EE server performance problems at the method level. With version 1.5, Altaworks adds support for IBM’s WebSphere 4.0.

Objectivity joins BEA partner program

May 17 — Objectivity has added support for BEA WebLogic to its object persistence tool. With this integration, Objectivity for Java can now serve as a resource manager for global transactions running within two- and three-tier enterprise applications.

Servertec expands Internet server

May 17 — Written in Java, the Servertec Internet Server 1.11 features improved security and performance. Severtec has also enhanced the server’s WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) and SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) support.

O’Reilly publishes Java Enterprise in a Nutshell, Second Edition

May 17 — Authors Jim Farley, William Crawford, and David Flanagan have updated Java Enterprise in a Nutshell to reflect the changes in J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) 1.3. The book provides tutorials on JDBC (Java Database Connectivity), RMI (Remote Method Invocation), servlets, JSP (JavaServer Pages), JNDI (Java Naming and Directory Interface), and EJB (Enterprise JavaBeans). It also covers JAXP, (Java API for XML Parsing) and JavaMail.

Data Junction extends IBM support

May 17 — Users of Data Junction’s data integration products can now access IBM’s WebSphere MQ and WebSphere Commerce 5.4. This added support improves Data Junction’s e-business integration abilities and flexibility.

Zeosoft launches beta testing program

May 10 — Developers can test Zeosoft’s ZeoSphere mobile platform during the ZeoSphere 1.0 Beta Program. ZeoSphere delivers applications, processes, and data to mobile and enterprise workers through a Java-based application server that resides on mobile devices. The testing will last eight weeks and will help Zeosoft gauge how quickly developers can build applications outside the company’s testing lab.

AdventNet adds WebSphere support to ManageEngine

May 10 — AdventNet has integrated support for IBM’s WebSphere into AdventNet ManageEngine, a graphical tool for automated Java Management Extensions (JMX) development. The tool offers real-time, standards-based, and business-oriented manageability for business processes, and application and middleware infrastructure management.

HIP extends AWT and Swing

May 10 — Our World Live introduces its Human Interface Package (HIP) products for Personal Java, Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE), and Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE). Version 1 of the HIP suite extends Sun’s AWT (Abstract Windowing Toolkit) and Swing so developers can create user interfaces that work consistently across multiple devices.

Microsoft releases SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC

May 3 — The Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) is a Type 4 JDBC driver that provides JDBC access to SQL Server 2000 through any Java-enabled applet, application, or application server.

Wily Technology adds BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 to Introscope 3.0

May 3 — Wily Technology has integrated BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 into its enterprise Web application management solution. Introscope 3.0 isolates application performance issues by offering component-level visibility into production Web applications. With the WebLogic integration, customers can automatically monitor WebLogic Server. Introscope also uses Java Management Extension (JMX) for advanced WebLogic monitoring and management control over any JMX-enabled application.

MetaMatrix partners with Versata

May 3 — MetaMatrix and Versata have formed an alliance to improve developer productivity. Versata provides a business logic solution for transaction and process logic, letting users develop and maintain Java applications based on business specifications. The MetaMatrix System works as an infrastructure to manage metadata and provide all applications access to disparate data sources through one standard interface. With Versata and MetaMatrix, developers can create applications with graphical tools, thereby eliminating the need to write code in the data or the business logic layer.

Small Worlds navigates Java systems

May 3 — Information Laboratory has released Small Worlds 1.5, a tool that traverses Java and C++ systems, performing structural analysis, evaluating stability, and identifying problems. New features include stability reports, instant UML (Unified Modeling Language) diagrams, inheritance trees and collaborations, and language-specific filters for Java and C++.
