Kodo JDO now available

February 15 — SolarMetric has released Kodo JDO Standard Edition, an implementation of Sun’s Java Data Objects (JDO) specification. It provides access to relational databases through the JDO specification.

Quadbase enhances EspressReport

February 15 — EspressReport 2.0, a Java-based reporting tool from Quadbase Systems, allows users to develop and deploy reports across any platform. EspressReport supports applets, servlets, and JSPs (JavaServer Pages), and works with most application servers, such as WebSphere, WebLogic, and iPlanet.

Altova unveils XML development tools

February 15 — The new XML Spy 4.3 Suite from Altova offers a suite of developer tools for advanced XML application development. The package consists of the XML Spy 4.3 IDE, the XML Spy 4.3 XSLT Designer, and the XML Spy 4.3 Document Editor, and supports Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE).

Telefónica and 4thpass launch Java services

February 15 — Telefónica, a Spanish wireless carrier, will launch the first mobile Java services in Europe with 4thpass technology. 4thpass technology allows carriers to send mobile Java applications over the air to wireless devices.

Octave Software launches content management solution

February 15 — Octave Software has introduced its next-generation content management solution, WebOctave. Supporting J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition), WebOctave is an application that controls, simplifies, and accelerates the process of managing and publishing electronic information over the Web.

ExtenXLS reads, modifies, and writes native Excel files

February 15 — The new ExtenXLS API Toolkit 1.01 is a 100 percent Java reporting tool from Extentech. ExtenXLS uses Excel files as templates for dynamic data, such as Website-usage reports, financial analysis, and statistical charting.

Sun releases J2SE 1.4

February 8 — The final release of Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 1.4 is now available. Version 1.4 features new I/O and 64-bit support, and enhanced support for SSL (Secure Socket Layer), LDAP (lightweight directory access protocol), and CORBA. It also includes improved XML support, advanced authentication, and a set of security services.

February 8 — Halcyon Software has introduced a beta version of iHub, a middleware solution that enables cross-integration and cross-development between Microsoft .Net, Windows, J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition), and XML-based applications. With iHub, a .Net Web Form can access an EJB (Enterprise JavaBean) hosted under any application server on a non-Windows machine.

Sitraka PerformaSure ensures maximum performance

February 8 — Sitraka has released PerformaSure 1.1, a tool for measuring, analyzing, and maximizing J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) applications’ performance prior to deployment. The tool provides graphical views into application server configuration and runtime information, JVM and database performance, network utilization and OS and hardware platform metrics. Its “tag-and-follow” technology reconstructs the execution path of end-user transactions to highlight performance issues.

PolarLake launches Web services platform

February 8 — PolarLake Web Services Express (WSE), a Web services platform based on PolarLake, an XML development and deployment platform, is now available. PolarLake WSE uses the PolarLake XML server to create and deploy Web service providers from EJB (Enterprise JavaBeans), COM (Component Object Model), and Java applications with no code changes, generated code, and scripts.

Kada Systems introduces applications for J2ME development

February 8 — Kada Systems has introduced Kada Reference Applications, tools that provide Java developers with templates for designing, developing, and deploying J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) database applications. Available for Palm OS, these mobile applications are built on the Connected Device Configuration (CDC) and Foundation Profile within J2ME, and support the small footprint database and data synchronization technologies from both OracleMobile and iAnywhere Solutions.

Cape Clear adds .Net support to CapeConnect

February 8 — Cape Clear has released a beta version of CapeConnect 3.5, the company’s Web services platform. CapeConnect provides a solution for building and deploying Web services and enabling interoperability between .Net, J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition), and CORBA. Version 3.5 includes support for Microsoft’s forthcoming Visual Studio .Net. release, enhanced UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration) functionality, and additional support for complex legacy applications.

Visual Mining ships NetCharts 4.0

— NetCharts 4.0, a Java-based charting software from Visual Mining is now available. This latest version introduces new drawing features and chart type.

X-Hive/DB 2.0 supports new modules

February 8 — X-Hive has updated its native XML database. X-Hive/DB 2.0 now supports WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning), J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition), and XUpdate.

SilverStream eXtend achieves J2EE 1.3 compatibility

February 1 — SilverStream Software’s eXtend product suite has passed the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) 1.3 Compatibility Test Suite. The eXtend suite includes eXtend Application Server, eXtend Composer, eXtend Director, and the eXtend Workbench. Available together or separately, all products are now J2EE 1.3 compatible.

No Magic reveals UML modeling tool

February 1 — No Magic has updated its visual UML modeling and CASE (computer-aided software engineering) tool. Supporting the latest Java, UML, and XML standards, MagicDraw UML 5.0 facilitates the analysis and design of object-oriented systems and databases. MagicDraw provides database schema modeling, DDL (data description language) generation, and reverse engineering facilities. Plus, MagicDraw now integrates with Borland JBuilder.

Kada licenses J2ME

February 1 — Kada Systems now licenses the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) Connected Device Configuration (CDC)/Foundation Profile and Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC)/Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP). Kada Systems developed the Kada Mobile Platform, an independent implementation of the J2ME specifications.

JA108 targets devices

February 1 — Nazomi Communications has released the JA108, a Java accelerator chip for mobile wireless applications. The chip, part of Nazomi’s new KChip product line, improves Java software execution, while extending battery life.

SAX2 now available from O’Reilly

February 1 — In SAX2, David Brownell covers the Simple API for XML, including filters, SAX properties, and SAX features; the book’s contents are based on the most current SAX version. In explaining the API, Brownell creates multiple parsers, including Sun’s parser, and tools that use SAX.

Thought Inc. releases CocoBase 4.0

January 25 — Thought Inc. is now shipping version 4.0 of its object-relational mapping tool. CocoBase 4.0 includes support for EJB (Enterprise JavaBeans) 2.0, CMP (container-managed persistence) entity bean relationships, local and remote bean interfaces, and generic session beans.

PolarLake updates Web services platform

January 25 — PolarLake 1.2, an enterprise XML and Web services platform for Java, features new support for the automated creation and deployment of Web services from any existing EJB (Enterprise JavaBean), Java, or COM system. Version 1.2 also includes PolarLake Designer, for constructing PolarLake applications from new or existing Java, EJB, or COM components, and the PolarLake Management Console, for deploying and managing PolarLake applications.

Sybase enhances its e-Business Platform

January 25 — Sybase has added new components to its e-Business Platform: Business Process Integrator Suite 2.1 bundles six Sybase and New Era of Networks products that enable organizations to integrate, automate, and manage business interactions with partners and customers. PowerDesigner 9.0 is an updated version of Sybase’s design tool, which allows e-business application development. Enterprise Portal 2.5 offers secure and personalized access to enterprise information.

Synergy connects development teams

January 25 — VeloTrex has released Synergy, a Java collaboration software package. This free, fully supported, three-tier Java application allows development team members to collaborate with each other during project development.

O’Reilly publishes new wireless book

January 25 — O’Reilly’s “Learning Wireless Java” is a reference for programmers familiar with the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) and interested in developing wireless software applications. Author Qusay H. Mahmoud introduces the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) for developing wireless applications, and presents tips for using Sun Microsystems’ KVM. He also provides the basics of MIDlet programming, and illustrates how to use the General Connection Framework for networking support, graphical APIs, and the J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) record management system for persistent storage.
