Manning teaches instant messaging protocol

April 12 — Iain Shigeoka shows developers how to incorporate instant messaging (IM) into their Java applications in Instant Messaging in Java: The Jabber Protocols. Published by Manning, the book walks readers through the process of building their own Jabber IM clients and servers in Java.

Actional releases Web services gateway

April 12 — SOAPswitch, a Web services product from Actional, provides a gateway that allows a company to publish, secure, and manage Web services. Supporting Java applications, the tool transforms existing software assets into Web services.

Insignia introduces Java-based solution for devices

April 12 — Insignia Solutions has launched a set of products for next-generation Java-enabled mobile devices. The Insignia Secure System Provisioning allows carriers to continuously introduce unique services and applications into handsets. And the Insignia Mobile Foundation software features the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP), two Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) technologies.

Excelsior updates JET

April 12 — Excelsior has added Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 1.4 support to JET 2.5. Excelsior’s JVM transforms Java applications into conventional native code Windows executables, while preserving full compatibility with the Java specification through the Mixed Compilation Model.

O’Reilly publishes Jython Essentials

April 12 — In O’Reilly’s Jython Essentials, authors Noel Rappin and Samuele Pedroni discuss how the Jython language interacts with Java. They show how to use Jython with Java libraries, including the Swing GUI (graphical user interface) toolkit, JDBC (Java Database Connectivity), the Servlet API, and XML tools.

JTransit deploys ColdFusion apps to J2EE

April 12 — JTransit has issued an early release of JTransit 2, a software for enabling integrated deployment of ColdFusion applications with JSP (JavaServer Pages), EJB (Enterprise JavaBeans), Java Servlets, other J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) technologies, and Witango/Tango 2000-based Web applications.

ObjectVenture launches pattern language

April 12 — ObjectVenture is forming an expert group to advance its newly introduced PCML (Pattern and Component Markup Language), a standards-based initiative for pattern-based development. By leveraging XML, PCML lets developers describe, package, exchange, apply, discover, and extend their own patterns and those created by others.

New file format to decrease embedded Java development costs

April 5 — The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has approved the JEFF standard, a file format that provides a ready-to-execute format for object-oriented programs. Defined by a J Consortium-sponsored working group, the format is expected to reduce the costs of using embedded Java technologies.

O’Reilly publishes Web services guide

April 5 — David A. Chappell and Tyler Jewell present an overview of Web services in O’Reilly’s Java Web Services. The book offers examples on how developers can use Java-based APIs in business-to-business communication environments. Chappell and Jewell cover SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), WSDL (Web Services Description Language), UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration), and interoperability with .Net.

Precise updates performance solution

April 5 — Precise Software Solutions has launched Precise/Indepth 2.0 for IBM WebSphere, the J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) application component of Precise i3, Precise’s solution for application performance management. Version 2 brings Precise’s SmarTune technology to WebSphere; SmarTune identifies and recommends solutions for application performance problems.

Day Software adds Oracle 9i support to Communique Unify

April 5 — Day Software’s business unification application, Communique Unify, now supports Oracle9i Application Server. Customers can now use the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE)-compliant Communique Unify with Oracle9iAS to deliver enterprise content to Websites, develop and deploy content-oriented Web services, and display content management capabilities.

4thpass extends support to wireless enterprise market

April 5 — 4thpass has introduced its Mobile Application System (MAS) Enterprise Edition, which allows enterprise wireless carriers to deliver mobile Java applications over the air to consumers. The technology lets enterprise IT departments manage and control the applications on employees’ Java handsets.

MKS integrates Integrity Manager with Implementer

April 5 — MKS has released Implementer 5.3, its software configuration management and deployment solution. Version 5.3 is integrated with MKS Integrity Manager, a Java-based tool for process and workflow management.

Manning releases Java 3D Programming

April 5Java 3D Programming by Daniel Selman introduces basic 3D graphics concepts and terminology and illustrates the techniques, features, workarounds, and bug fixes for practical Java 3D work. The book offers tips and advice on minimizing development time and managing assets, and includes more than 35 programming examples.

JQA improves Java code quality

April 5 — ISM has partnered with publicspace.net to release JQA, a quality assurance solution for Java. The new tool, available for IBM’s VisualAge for Java and Apple’s Mac OS X, helps software development organizations improve the quality of their Java code.
