INDEXHEAD: ARM extends Java byte code to devices

ARM has improved its ARM architecture with the announcement of the ARM Jazelle architecture extension. That revision allows devices relying on the ARM architecture to execute Java byte code directly. That capability supplies developers of embedded applications with a low-power microprocessor option that can execute Java applications. The ARM Jazelle extension does not require any additional memory or hardware add-ons, or JIT compiler technology. The Jazelle extension supports the ARM Thumb instruction set, which means operating systems and application code can be reused on Jazelle-enabled, ARM-Powered devices.

The ARM Jazelle-enabled microprocessors are expected to be licensed as intellectual property (IP) cores for implementation within ASIC or ASSP designs. Pricing will vary, based on negotiations with ARM semiconductor licensees and customized system-level design requirements.
