INDEXHEAD: Java community prepares for upcoming JCP elections

Elections will be held this fall for the Java Community Process Executive Committee. Voters will select 10 ratified seats and 5 elected seats per committee. All members of the Java community that are registered members of the JCP are eligible to vote. Developers must register with the JCP by Sept. 27 to be eligible for selecting the ratified seats. To choose the five elected seats, developers must register by Oct. 27.

Elected to three-year terms, the committees will supervise new Java developments and the maintenance of existing Java technologies through the JCP. In December the newly elected Standard/Enterprise Executive Committee and Micro Edition Executive Committee will relieve an interim committee that has been overseeing those tasks since June.

The Mobile Information Device (MID) profile will enable the development of next-generation, interactive services for wireless devices. Based on J2ME, the MID profile was created by more than 20 companies through the Java Community Process.

INDEXHEAD: iServer changes name

Servertec has changed its iServer product name to Servertec Internet Server. As a result, iServer TINI Edition will now be sold under the name Servertec Internet Server TINI Edition.

The Servertec Internet Server offers an environment for building and deploying cross-platform Web-based business applications. It features a Web server that serves static Webpages and an application server that generates dynamic, data-driven Webpages using Java servlets, JavaServer Pages, iScript, Common Gateway Interface, and server-side includes. In addition, it is a servlet engine, providing servlet capabilities to any application or Web server supporting Apache Modules, AOL Server Modules, ISAPI, NSAPI, CGI, or Java.

Written entirely in Java, Servertec Internet Server TINI Edition is an application/Web server that runs on TINI. Using that product, developers can create applications that can access 1-wire chips.

INDEXHEAD: Idetix integrates PointBase with Revise

Idetix Software Systems has entered into another strategic partnership, this time with PointBase. Future releases of Idetix’s Revise Web Application and Revise Developer’s Tool for Content Management will ship with PointBase’s Embedded Server database product. The joint venture will allow developers to create 100 percent pure Java database-driven content management applications that allow mobile content contributors to update Websites anywhere on any device.

Revize is a Java-based Web content management system that integrates into the application layer of a data center. It can be deployed on any Web server that supports Java servlets.

PointBase develops technology for extending and synchronizing enterprise data among networked servers, desktop PCs, laptops, and wireless devices.

TogetherSoft has released version 4.1 of Together Control Center, a team-oriented development environment for building enterprise applications. This updated version was designed for development teams using Java and J2EE application servers to build e-business applications faster. It also supports C++, IDL, and XML.

INDEXHEAD: Jacknife dives into J2ME-based wireless development

Zucotto Wireless will ship its Jacknife Development Suite in the fourth quarter of 2000. A set of software- and hardware-based tools, the suite will provide developers with products and services to build wireless applications and devices based on J2ME. Jacknife combines Java with other wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, GSM, CDMA, and 802.11. Users will be able to create embedded applications for cellular phones, pagers, PDAs, automotive electronics, set-top boxes, and other wireless consumer devices.

The suite includes the WhiteBoard Wireless Java SDK; the XpressoBoard Hardware Development Kit; and training, support, and development services. Featuring a support layer that incorporates an enhanced implementation of J2ME, developers use the WhiteBoard SDK to develop and test wireless Java apps and services.

Developers integrate, validate, and test embedded systems software with the XpressoBoard HDK and the Xpresso Java semiconductor.

INDEXHEAD: Bluestone Java Transaction Service offers distributed transactioning

Bluestone Java Transaction Service 2.0 is now available through Bluestone Software. Running as an embedded distributed service in the Bluestone Internet Operating Environment, the new product provides distributed transactioning with a pure Java transactioning system, optimized for Internet and wireless commercial services.

The Java Transaction Service executes within the application server process and thus circumvents the interprocess communications associated with legacy transaction processing monitors. It also offers resiliency and high availability.

In addition, Bluestone has integrated Merant’s SequeLink 5.0 data access technology into the Java Transaction Service. SequeLink incorporates JCBC 2.0 drivers with XA support, allowing Bluestone to perform distributed transactions with relational databases.

INDEXHEAD: Customize AS/400 data displays on the client with Visual Underneath

Core Technology has updated its Visual Underneath screen transformation tool for its CTCBridge 5250 emulation for Java. A browser-based solution that delivers 5250 emulation as a Java applet, CTCBridge 5250 provides Internet or intranet access to AS/400 midrange systems. It runs on any client platform that supports a Java-based browser. Visual Underneath allows AS/400 data displays to be customized at the client level, with no programming changes required on the host.

Features in Visual Underneath 3.00 include:

  • Additional graphics-to-screen presentations
  • Ability to change sizes and types of Java-enabled fonts
  • Designer-controlled colors
  • Ability to add combo-type pull-down-list boxes (enabling data input) as well as check boxes and radio buttons
  • Global filtering capability for defining a common look for all or a series of screens

Version 3.00 of Visual Underneath is scheduled for release Oct. 31, 2000.

INDEXHEAD: Coollogic debuts Coollinux AE for Internet appliances

Coollogic’s Coollinux AE is now available for original equipment manufacturers. Built around the Linux operating system and utilizing Java, Coollinux features a core operating system designed for Internet appliances such as set-top boxes, countertop devices, Web pads, and thin clients. The product also features a reflash technology, which produces longer-lasting hardware products for OEMs. Reflash allows remote updates and upgrades to the core software and user-information management.

A typical Coollinux AE configuration would consist of an integrated software stack containing a full-featured Web browser, enhanced multimedia applications and plug-ins, instant messaging, and customer-specific user interfaces and portals. OEM-level support and service are also included.

INDEXHEAD: ObjectFX launches L-commerce services

ObjectFX now offers location-based services for all types of mobile wireless devices. Those L-commerce (location commerce) services, including access to map viewing, point-to-point routing, weather information, and backend corporate information sources, can be integrated into wireless products, online services, or internal applications.

The L-commerce services currently available are based on ObjectFX’s Spatial FX, an n-tier software platform built in Java. Features of those services include:

  • Map viewing and navigation
  • Address geocoding
  • Point-to-point routing with maps and/or driving directions
  • Proximity searches
  • Access to detailed weather information
  • Access to backend corporate information sources
  • Flexible deployment options for voice, WAP, HTML, or thin Java clients
  • Highly scalable backend application servers

Simple APIs can access those services, and customers can choose from VXML, WML, XML, or HTTP QueryStrings. In addition, ObjectFX and selected partners are currently developing voice-driven and WML/WAP-based applications. Demonstrations and pricing information are available upon request.
